Unlike the nine inch screen version also listed here, the seven inch screen version doesn't come with a remote control, so every control required is a button on the player, which is no problem as it's normally within easy reach. My teenage daughter prefers this method of operation as our old portable player couldn't operate menus when the remote battery failed, and they were short lived expensive coin batteries. Other reviews here say the 9" version's soft touch buttons are 'too sensitive', but my kids have no problems using this 7" player's positive 'click' buttons. The DVD player has a inbuilt battery capable of 'up to 4 hours' replay, easily lasting one long film. The DVD player also works running off the 13A mains or 12v car supply and, unlike some, it recharges the battery while playing DVDs via external power. Despite the 7" LCD screen resolution being only 480×234 pixels, the picture quality is vivid and looks pretty good at standard viewing distances, and the twin speaker sound is impressive, with Standard/Dynamic/Vocals/Off options. There's also a USB socket for a Micro USB Flash Drive to replay PC MP3, jPeg and video MPeg-4 or xvid AVI files and it can connect to a stills camera. The player can handle commercial DVDs, DVD-/+R, CDs and VCD disks. It plays our DVD-R video disks perfectly and the disc spinning mechanics are fairly quiet in operation. The DVD player is region 2 locked (and with no remote option it's probably impossible to convert it to region free).
There's one headphone socket, so a headphone splitter adaptor is required for dual viewing (the battery lasts a bit longer on headphones). There's a slide-on power switch, with top buttons for DVD play controls, Volume, Options (LCD/Disc/USB/Setup) and Open (which flips up the optical drive lid to access the DVD). The unit has two discreet LEDs for charging and power in, and there's a jack socket for the AV out to a TV. The screen can push backwards right down horizontal to the base, and then the hinges click firmly into place giving the player the feel of a tablet. As well as displaying the menu/video, the LCD screen can also show the battery charge left and display on-screen information like 'paused'. Playback position on the DVD is lost when the player is switched off. The 7" screen is quite small at 15.5 x 8.7 cm as it's very 16:9 widescreen. Sony also make the similar 9" screen version of this DVD player, the DVP-FX980, that includes a decent 2xAA battery RMT-D195 remote control as well as the higher resolution 800×480 pixel 9" screen, but it is 3.6 x 1.5 cm bigger and costs almost twice as much as the 7" model. My daughter is happy she got the 7" version though, and she had the option of either.
Overall our Sony 7" player works very well and the TV out is useful on family holidays when there's a TV in the caravan/cottage (although you may miss the lack of a remote if you regularly play through a TV in the distance). Mostly our DVD player is used by our kids close-up in the car or in bed, and it's a hit with them - so 5* at the typical street price of £85. The Sony is 200 x 42.5 x 155 mm, weighs 1.4kg, seems well made (including the charger/12v lead) and looks very classy in black, particularly with the patterned Sony screen lid folded down (bit like a netbook). The Sony 7" DVD player comes with a 13A UK plug mains charger (90 cm lead), a 12v car cable (180cm lead), the instruction booklet, and an AV out adaptor cable. This three phono (red/white audio + yellow video) composite adaptor cable is a bit of a pain as it is only 17cm long and terminates in phono sockets, so another cable is required to pass on the signal to the TV (typically a three phono plug to SCART lead). Started to learn to paint 6 months ago , bought some art books but found it difficult to paint and read. Ha presto a sony dvd player . I can watch my painting books on dvd, stop on hold then once feel ready move on. Brilliant. 4 hour battery life ,sit in car or shed or even in hospital and watch your favourite films or listen to your favourite music. Brilliant. The case is solid chunkey and not to weighty.
