Despite some of the less than perfect scores, this TV is very good. I do not understand some of the complaints other people had about it saying it is confusing etc. It took me 10-15 mins from first opening the box to putting it onto my desk (NOTE: Screwdriver required). For me I knew what I was doing anyway but for people who have any problems, there are step by step instructions showing you how to fit it onto the stand, or a separate lot of instructions showing how to mount it onto a wall using the brackets.
Once you are all plugged in, when you switch the TV on it automatically goes into set up mode (NOTE: If you have speakers plugged in, make sure the volume is low as distortion happens for a few seconds while first running the set up). The set up is very easy which requires the usual language select and if your using a antenna or cable, but also an optional internet option if you want to browse the web via your TV. This TV does wired connection and wireless too depending on what you prefer.
Once the set up is complete you are hopefully now watching TV. The remote is simple enough to use saying normal things like "options" & "guide" etc. And this is where it confused me when someone said the TV Manual is bad.. there is a button on the remote saying "manual" and it brings up a page full of different topics you may need help with. It's simple to use as you use the arrows and the middle round button which is usually the "OK" button. It has topics including display to try and get your picture looking best as it can. And topics on anything you need to know about the features the TV offers. But you only have to use this if you are really new to these kind of TV's as I have found out they are all pretty much the same as each other.
One more positive thing about this TV I would like to add is the amount of options for the display. I was scrolling through a lot of different picture options only to find I was on the simple settings, and once you click advanced settings it brought up a lot more. It also has scene select so you can change different settings for different things like Games, movies, TV and music.
The only negative thing or things, one being quite big and the other being small is I cant seem to find any buttons on the actual TV to control the channels, volume or source. This means if your remote runs out of batteries then your a bit stuffed.
The small negative thing (which is in the description anyway) is this TV only has 2 HDMI sockets. I think it would of sold a lot more if they added at least one more which would attract more people to it. This can be easily solved though by buying a HDMI Switcher.
OVERALL:
+ Great picture display & options
+ Easy to set up
+ Lots of internet apps
+ Good in TV manual
+/- Only had 2 HDMI's but if you need more you can buy a HDMI switcher.
- No buttons (or at least not visible) to change channels, volume or source - remote seems essential.
FINAL NOTE: I use this TV for PC gaming and you can get the highest resolution possible using this TV and it also has a high refresh rate so there is not jumpiness in the game, also the picture looks great!

Following on from their 5-star review in What Hi-Fi's 32-inch TV category last year, the KDL-32W653a continues Sony's return to form. They've now incorporated X-Reality PRO from 2012's higher end models, as well as Motionflow XR 200Hz. This is my first flat screen TV, replacing an old CRT. Standard definition Freeview is upscaled and looks much, much better than expected. The four Freeview HD channels look absolutely superb. The display quality is very uniform and I've not noticed any clouding. The build and styling is really nice, with a thin black metal bezel. Sound quality is better than most flat LED TVs. The user interface is sleek and easy to both set-up and navigate. WiFi connectivity is built-in and features BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Sony Entertainment Network, Demand 5, Netflix, LoveFilm and various other media apps. It's a shame it doesn't have 4OD, but hopefully this will come on board with future updates. You get two HDMI ports, 1 SCART socket, 1 USB, 1 ethernet and various audio sockets. For the price, the W653a is amazing value. Sony are selling this on their website for £549, with a £50 discount if ordered online. John Lewis stores are selling this model for £499.95 with a free five-year warranty. I'd highly recommend this television to new-comers to HD TV and people looking for a great quality, mid-range set for living rooms where space is at a premium. Please note: Screen Mirroring works with Miracast compliant devices only. Sadly, if you use an iPad, you'll probably need to get an Apple TV device to use AirPlay.

Beautiful sleek TV - very clear HD picture - glad to have bought this after sending the Samsung back. Only limitation is the one USB which gets taken by the camera

Fantastic picture quality in HD and very attractive styling. Typically of Sony the user experience is refined and succinct with an option to restore to factory settings should you wish. My brother bought a Samsung UE40F6200 for the same price at the same time I bought this and he swapped it for the KDL-42W653A because of the vast difference in picture quality. Wirelessly displays my iphone pics & vids too.

After 25 years of owning a Sony CRT telly it started to give up the ghost so I researched a quality TV that was within a limited budget. The choice came down to a Samsung or the Sony W6. The Sony W6 42 inch was a stretch past my budget but worth every penny as it had more options than the Samsung. I have now had this telly for 3 days and I love it. The images are crisp and clean. The written word is so clear!!! The sound is excellent. For the reviewer who did not know where the manual buttons are to turn off the TV - they are on the left side of the TV!!! And the difference in size from my old 26 inch to a 42 inch is amazing - almost like being at the cinema (almost ha ha!!). I was able to set up my Tivo box, DVD player and video player all of which work very well. The SD is almost as good as the HD as another reviewer said - I flipped back and forth from SD to HD channel to check. The one short coming I have found is that some of the functions I don't understand I cannot find in the i-manual such has how to turn off the idle standby or what auto dsl means. But these are very minor and I am sure I will discover what I need to know with a bit more investigation. I have not yet tried WiFi as I am happy to use my computer for computing and telly for telly. All in All I am over the moon with my new TV!!!
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Sony has a brilliant reputation amongst consumers for its ability to create quality products (albeit usually with a premium price-tag). Personally I don't own too many Sony products, and I've never before had the privilege of owning a Sony TV so it was with anticipation that I awaited receipt of this product.
My first impressions were extremely positive. The TV has a very thin frame and it's crystal clear glass display is something to behold. The stand is contemporary and well designed; it pretty much makes the other televisions in my house appear old-fashioned and clunky (which I guess is a positive and a negative combined into one!) One further observation is that although the screen is every bit of the 32-inches promised, the TV looks noticeably smaller than other TVs which are by all intents and purposes the same size. This is because of the thin frame mentioned previously, however it does give the illusion of watching a smaller TV and of course means that it takes up less space. Where a 32-inch TV had previously looked appropriate for the room that it was positioned in, with this TV I'm sure you could get away with a much larger TV in the same space.
Aesthetically pleasing as the TV clearly is, that is arguably the least important feature of a television. I'm happy to report that this TV performs superbly on all other counts. The initial set-up was particularly easy and after five-ten minutes I was ready to watch TV. Let me begin with an analysis of the picture and sound quality. The picture is sharp and the colours well-defined. The picture is almost HD quality even when you are not on a HD channel. When you do use HD, the picture steps up another notch. I doubt there is a TV on the market that is sharp and clear as HD images on this Sony TV, if there is I've certainly not seen it. The sound quality on the TV is equally exceptional and cannot be faulted.
This covers the most basic features of the television, however there is definitely more to this TV than just watching live TV. Firstly special mention goes to the menus and TV guide on this TV. Words cannot convey how smoothly this TV transitions into opening up menu options. They are easy to navigate and very self-explanatory. The TV guide itself looks smart, is clearly HD and functions effectively. Even changing channel is something to behold as you scroll through the channels and a menu describing what's on right now glides up on the left of the screen. This fancy menu may be considered by some to be an unnecessary luxury, but it is part of what separates this TV from another cheaper model and is therefore worth a mention.
One function of this TV which isn't clearly advertised in either the Amazon description or indeed on the Sony website is the fact that it can function as a PVR TV for those without Sky Plus, Virgin etc. If you plug in a USB removable hard-drive, you can pause live TV and set the timer to record a number of upcoming programmes. One caveat to this is that you can only record one channel at a time and you can't change channel whilst recording on a particular channel. The feature is therefore most useful if you wish to record your favourite programme whilst out, or if you need to pause. The recorder works brilliantly and I've never had any issues whatsoever.
The thing that really justifies the hefty price-tag on the TV is the fact that it is 'Smart' and that is I guess what will attract the most buyers. After the initial set-up which requires you to connect your TV to the internet, you are away. With the simple push of a button you can navigate through a number of pre-installed apps in the TV which include BBC iPlayer, Demand Five, YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter and many, many more (note no apps have yet been designed for ITV player or Channel 4 OD, although these will inevitably be developed in the not-too-distant future). These apps work superbly, I've watched several programmes using iPlayer so far and have not experienced one instance of buffering (this will obviously depend heavily on the quality of internet connection). Furthermore if you stop whilst watching a programme on iPlayer, you can pick up from exactly where you left off next time you log into the app. The YouTube and Facebook apps work equally well. There are also numerous pre-installed games, I've only tried a couple so far, but they appear to be pretty standard fare that you might expect on a smartphone app store.
If I'm honest I suspect I'm still at the tip of the iceberg in terms of the true capabilities of this TV, but from everything I've seen so far I am incredibly impressed. The TV looks great and it performs fantastically in every area from simply watching TV to it's PVR service to it's online connectivity.
I cannot recommend this TV highly and can only say that you are looking for a truly quality product then this should be right up your street.

I bought the TV as a gift. It got very nice image, enough HDMI extra ports, and good HDTV reception builtin.

This was a big purchase for us and a replacement for a rather old Sony TV. We are really pleased with it. Very easy to set up, very light to move around I would have like a screen that swivels on the base but it doesnt so the whole tv has to move slightly when we want to watch it. Overall really pleased and it will hopefully last us a very long time

Initial reactions (after 3 days):
Very easy to set up, though the mains adaptor plug is a bit cheap and nasty for an item of this style.
Generally good on-screen information, once you've worked out how to find things
Impressive sound quality for a TV this size
Excellent picture quality (I use a Sky HD box), but I notice loss of clarity if viewing at an angle - anyone else observed this?
Will update this review further
