Customer Reviews: Humax DTR-T1000 YouView Digital TV Recorder

Great Product, 8 Feb 2013
By R. Kellow
This review is from : Humax DTR-T1000 YouView Digital TV Recorder (Electronics)

Many of the mainstream reviews says this product does nothing revolutionary, and in a way they are right if you like faffing around with a computer as well as a freeview box, or want to have several boxes to access only a few of the UK's catch up services. Having spent many hours looking for the best solution to fuss free, click and play on demand TV that all the family can use (including the kids) from ALL the main UK broadcasters, I have to say that this product is the business. Here's the thing: there simply is no other product on the market currently that will do what the Youview box does - not a single one, and I have spent a long time looking. The closest is the PS3, but this is not family friendly at all requiring the use of multiple complicated controllers, multiple apps, is slow and unstable; I had trouble getting a smooth stream even on fast fibre broadband. For whatever reason (manufacturer or broadcaster) no other product allows fuss free access to BBC, ITV, C4 and C5 catchup services in one box and in an easy to use simple interface. That is for starters. What's more, no other box features the great cross catch-up service search feature which is indispensible. Now, although I am not using this for live TV, combine these catch up features with Freeview including the EPG scroll back for one click catchup and also record features and you truly have a winner.

This is a good first YouView box and is very easy to set up and install. The only downside (pointed out in many reviews) is the lack of an inbuilt WiFi adaptor, which is bizarre to say the least as the whole point of it, and without which it cannot work, is an internet connection! So on top of a fairly hefty price one has to spend on a wifi dongle or (better) a DLan Power adaptor kit.

Seamless integration of demand tv and freeview hd, 3 Sep 2012

Opening the EPG I can view the next 7 days tv schedule, watch live tv (Hd or standard definition), view the last 7 days tv schedule and (most importantly) watch any demand tv channel immediately without the fuss of opening IPlayer, ITV player, 4OD or Demand 5.

I have an Internet connection which gets 2.8Mbs download speed and I am pleased to say that i get no buffering through my (devolo powerline adapter) wired network connection.

Things I like the most:
1. Humax prompts you to view / record in HD if available on an HD channel.
2. It's virtually silent. I cannot hear it even in a silent room.
3. Remote control can be programmed to operate as a universal remote to control my Sony TV (one less remote).
4. As soon as you turn on the humax box, it records the channel you are on immediately so you can pause or rewind live tv IMMEDIATELY... No fuss and really handy if someone talks at the wrong moment!!
5. The Youview function is without doubt the single reason why you should buy this box over the other humax boxes.
6. You can speed up the 'turn on' time to about 5-10 secs by changing the Eco mode to low. (otherwise it takes several minutes!!)
7. Item came with 2 years warranty direct with humax (in addition to anything amazon offers).

Things that could be better
1. You can't programme the skip forward button to jump multiples of minutes to help skip adverts. Instead you get speed options to fast forward (x2, x4, x12, x30 etc). The other humax boxes can do this.
2. You can't create channel favourite lists. the other humax boxes can do this.
3. There is no wifi. (arguably with power line adapters you will get a better connection anyway)

If, like me, you traditionally go for Sony equipment, then just look at the amount of positive 5* feedback humax gets compared to other brands and you will see that people have far less complaints or problems with humax... Just a thought to consider.

Top PVR, 20 Jan 2013

Very easy to install - all cables come in the box. Excellent guide, simply move backwards on it to find catch-up tv. Can also search all tv, catchup and movies from one box.

Has access to Now TV (pay extra for this, but there's no contract to tie you in) with new movie releases, TV show series etc. Huge range on this.

Overall, very easy to use and very comprehensive.

Phew! 2nd time lucky with my Freeview recorder choice!, 23 Dec 2012
By Mr. David J. Emmins "Davestretch"
This review is from : Humax DTR-T1000 YouView Digital TV Recorder (Electronics)

I have recently cancelled my Sky subscription as I no longer felt it was value for money and therefore needed a new PVR for TV recording duties.

After much debate between Freeview/YouView and Freesat/Freetime I ultimately decided upon a Panasonic Blur-Ray Player/Feeeview HD recorder. That turned out to be a non-starter due to poor picture quality and antiquated operation through poorly designed menus and EPG so is on its way back to Amazon for a refund....

So, now let's pick up a YouView box from my local Richer Sounds in time for Xmas.

Glad to say that set up was a breeze. Unit connected to the aerial, modem, TV and power in a few minutes and switched on the unit. Boot time was a little slow but once up it quickly tuned the channels and updated the software to the latest specs.

In operation I have found the unit a doddle to operate and haven't had to refer to the user guide once. The EPG is clear and easy to use and the way On Demand content is integrated makes it a joy to use.

The picture from the Freeview HD is excellent with more detail on a BBC One HD recording of Have I Got News For You than even Sky was. Never realised just how many creases Ian Hislop has! The non-HD content is presented at the best quality that Standard Def digital TV can muster. In all, no discernible digital noise to report. I get a Signal Strength of 72% and Quality 100% from my aerial connection.

My only gripes are minor ones:
1. Would love to be able to reorder the programs in the EPG. (You can only currently Hide channels you don't want)
2. Search function only looks in the On Demand items and not upcoming programs in the EPG.

Both of these are minor and will most likely be updated with future software releases.

A few things to get used to or learn but excellent, 12 Dec 2012

In use for a month very pleased with this as well as the Humax Foxsat HDR 500GB Freesat HD Digital TV Recorder (Requires Satellite Dish) I bought on impulse (Should have got £10 cheaper on Amazon and waited a day or so!).
Pluses:
Easy to connect and set up and use.

Good quality video and sound

Storage holds more than anticipated, which since you frequently delete what you have just watched should be enough for everyone's needs.

Easier access to iplayers than separate providers via computer - no up and down to use keyboard.

Minuses:
On ECO mode boot up time very long. I have no problem with that. Note comes on screen prompting you to remove ECO setting for faster start up - and higher electricity bills!!!

User manual feels dumbed down and you feel cheated not having the usual technical manual to explore. Information is on the Youview site and seems to be growing and improving. I had difficulty with Youview remote also turning on the Humax freesat receiver, which because of the line of sight turned one off and the other on alternately. The fix is on the Youview support site but should also be in a technical manual! The user manual for most issues follows the idiot route of check connections, turn it on or off, contact ISP etc etc - not very helpful. A technical manual should be included if only for codes to control TV and other devices as supplied in the equivalent Freesat product.

Youview is developing and strongly recommend purchasers participate on their support site so future service is responsive to customers.

On demand does not seem an improvement on using iplayer - admitedly easier to find program and seems to run a bit smoother but can not download / record and no evidence of improved buffering/ cache which I would have expected.

In spite of the above still give it 5 stars considered as a software (Youview) and hardware (Humax) product. Reading articles and reviews I have a concern that menus will be cluttered with pay services and I hope the option is already there or will be to personalize the services I want to use.

Overall you will not go wrong to purchase this. I think price was reasonable for a new product but hopefully will drop below £200 in a while.

I took a gamble, and won!, 26 Oct 2012

After years of buying those cheap little £80-odd Freeview+ PVR's and having to put up with them freezing, crashing, losing channels and so on, i had decided that enough was enough. Whilst watching television one night, an advert came on for a new type of PVR. That box was called, YOUVIEW.

After doing some research online, and talking to some people in shops, (That tried to persuade me into buying a competing system for a fraction of the cost, that i later ended up returning as faulty!), I bought it, and i have not looked back since! (Except when using the "scrollback" feature)

The "ScrollBack" feature allows you to go back through the guide and play TV shows through selected catch-up services like iPlayer or 4OD. Shows that can be played have a small icon against them to let you know.

This box has found ALL my local digital free-to-air channels including all four HD channels. I can now enjoy any movie or TV show broadcast on BBC1,2, ITV and Channel 4 in glorious High Definition. The difference in picture quality is AMAZING!

I was also able to catch-up with a Nigellissima episode i had missed by using the search feature. You just type in the name of the program you are searching for by using your remote. Its alot like texting on an old Nokia phone. Once the Youview box finds what you are searching for, the name of the program will appear along the bottom of the screen. You are then able to select from shows coming up, or episodes available on catch-up services. Once an episode has been selected, a synopsis will appear. You can then choose to watch the series, or just pick one episode. Certain OD Players let you choose to stream in HD if you have the bandwidth.

to recap;

- This FreeviewHD+ box has two tuners meaning you can record one program whilst recording another, (A God send for someone like myself who works late and misses alot of the prime-time goodness)
- You should be able to receive up to four Freeview HD channels. (BBC1HD, BBCHD, ITV1HD and 4HD)
- You can record a whole series with a push of a button
- You are also able to erase either an episode, or whole series from the MyView window with ease
- The box comes with apps such as iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand5, Ch5 Milkshake, and now SKYs NOW TV
- The menu is really sleek, easy to navigate and items load up quickly after pushing the OK button

Also, the @Youview twitter account keeps talking of "great things" being announced soon, so who knows whats around the corner. Keep 'em peeled!

Im sure there are more points that ive missed, and there are a few negatives, but they're only minor. One i would like to highlight is the startup time if you choose a low power mode during standby. The unit can take nearly THREE MINUTES to power up if you choose this option during setup.

I have a 5 year old HD ready digital TV with free-view and just wanted all the catchup and HD services without the monthly payment commitments, so this is an ideal solution. The picture quality on the HD channels is fantastic, I had everything I needed in the box and the setup/operation is very clear and easy to understand. It is also a smart looking piece of equipment, I am very happy with my purchase and quick delivery time. Jaydee, Leeds

Ive tried several PVRs from different brands over the past few years, never satisfied, always having missing recordings, non working series links, un navigatable EPGs, and the worse problem of all, un responsive machines! When you press a button on the remote you want it to move on the screen within a second..... well....Im so glad I found this machine!!!

Its brilliant!!! It simply works!
I wont go into all the tech stuff about Youview and On Demand blah blah cuz you can look that up in the specs.
What I love about this machine is...
Responsive - always withing a second of pressing a button
Fast EPG, to populate and navigate
Easy to set recordings (single or series) and oh so fast!
Attractive EPG with small screen top right showing what channel you were on (with audio).. Pretty much whatever you are navigating you still get the preview box top right :)
Remote Control is a good shape and size, buttons are sensible places.
Qucik access "Guide" button into the EPG or press the blue "Youview" button to access other menus like your library "my view" settings, On Demand etc... Its all done in a sleek left and right press on the remote control.
When watching recording back from library "My View" it is so nice the ammount of control you have.. skip forwards goes 1 minute at a time, and skip back goes back 15 seconds at a time - which when you think about it, its perfect...you go a litttle too far and edge back a little at a time (well done Humax). and I must add that the speed is amazing, no buffering, no waiting a few moments while it skips, it just flies and is instant.. same for fast forward, it goes upto something like 30X speed but you can see the exact time and speed on the bottom display bar and its instant responce to your remote click :)
You can "hide" your unwanted channels.. personally out of 117 channels I hid all but 13 as so many dross channels out there.. anyway, when you are in the EPG you then rearrange them... I hid BBc1 bbc2 itv and C4 because there are HD versions of them... and do you know what this clever little box did? It knew what I had done and then put the HD versions of those channels slotted at the top of the pprogramme list!! It just knew what i wanted lol.

As soon as Ive posted this Ill remember something else i have forgot...
It runs quiet, the front light displays are enough to look cool but not too much to annoy.
Picture quality superb, even on upscaled channels.

Well done Humax, it seems they have really sat down and thought this machine and its functions through carefully.

I hardley ever write reviews but Im just so impressed I dont mind singing Humaxs praises as its well deserved.
This machine is AWESOME, do not hesitate, BUY IT

Mr Happy
