A definite improvement!, 14 Mar 2012

Previously owned a Cyclone Micro 2+ which was very good although I did have a few niggles, namely the poor remote control range (very very narrow line of sight operation) and a occasional habit of jumping from one file to the next file in mid-file.
This new one has a remote that works from almost any angle, a new improved User Interface and the fast forward / rewind reacts a lot faster as well.
All in all a great improvement on an already brilliant product!

Mind your hidden files..!!!!, 25 Jun 2012

Been after one of these things for a while now and finally took the plunge!
Previously I'd been using a USB stick via a usb port on a Philips DVD player to access any divx/avi files I had, but the increasing popularity of MKV files meant I had to look at other devices.

It was delivered within 3 days and straight away plugged into my TV.
You're presented with a very smart 'start-up' screen that gives you access to the internal memory, external USB memory or setup.
A quick delve into setup let me select a video mode that suits my TV, and bingo, that's all I needed to do.

I have an external 320 drive filled with all sorts of stuff and it played everything..... nearly!!!!

There was quite a few AVI files that prompted a "Cannot play file" message - which shocked me.
As far as I knew they were no different than other AVI files that it quite happily played.
I checked the file info and the codecs etc were the same as files that played with no problem.

I then checked the external drive on a PC and enabled "view hidden files.
This revealed duplicate files - which I deleted.
The drive was plugged back into the Cyclone and BINGO - everything that had previously failed to play was now working!
I can only presume that the hidden files were confusing the Cyclone some where along the line.

So, in summary, brilliant little box.
Plays everything and everywhere (my 2 kids can plug into their TV's too)!

DTS issues with LG TV's? This solves the problem., 21 Jun 2012

I have never owned any of these media players in the past as they seemed too good to be true and some of the reviews I read highlighted some issues with the earlier models. As the title of my review suggests, I bought a large LG 3DTV in January, however a certain high street electrical retailer that is also an Indian food failed to inform me that DTS is not supported by LG as they refuse to pay the licence fees. You wouldn't think that would be a big deal, however my brother rips his blu-rays and puts them on an external usb drive for me and the audio format is usually in DTS, so I end up having to re-encode the audio which is a real pain. That's in the past now as the Cyclone Micro 3 now down mixes DTS to stereo and plays perfectly on the LG TV! If you have the same issue, it's a really viable option for under £40.
The Micro 3 really is a fantastic little piece of tech, so far it has played every file format I have thrown at it. You can adjust the picture settings to suit your TV's resolution and even though there have been criticisms with the remote, I have so far not encountered any problems. It's not the most responsive remote and needs to be in clear view of the device itself but other than that no issues. I have attached an SD card, a usb flash drive and a powered 1.5TB external drive and it picked up all the files and played them. I'm sure there may be a few lesser used file formats that it might not play like FLV etc, but it really is up to date with the latest most popular codecs and plays 1080p movies very well. I wouldn't say the playback is 100% perfect as it's not always buttery smooth but it is still very good.
The size of the device is very small and fits in the hand. The build quality is surprisingly good and very sturdy. The only downside I can think of is how the outputs/inputs are positioned, you will have cables coming out from both sides of the device, however if you have this contained within a TV cabinet or AV unit, it won't be noticeable. It's also worth noting that the Micro 3 comes with a few different USB cable adapters to suit different connections, all in all making it good value for money. It even has 8GB internal storage meaning you can connect it to your pc or mac and drag and drop files directly onto the device.
To summarise, I can't find a better alternative media player that plays this many file formats, down mixes DTS, acts as an external storage device, has several connection solutions and is small enough to be easily portable for under £40. Really amazing.

Important: Change battery in remote from CR2025 to CR2032, 22 Jan 2013

This is important information that customers, Amazon and the maker should be made aware of; the wrong battery is fitted to the remote controls! A lot of people including me were having a very frustrating time trying to get the remote to work and when it did it was only from a short distance and from a narrow operating angle. I was ready to return this item as faulty however another reviewer suggested changing the battery type and it worked. The battery supplied CR2025 is too thin. The replacement CR2032 is the same voltage (3V) however it has a lot more depth and this makes all the difference. I can now use the remote at greater distance and from a much wider angle. I had given this product 1 star which might have been a bit mean but i was fed up with not being able to use it when the remote failed completely. Now that it is finally working properly i can give an honest opinion as to the features of the product. The menu is user friendly and easy to navigate. It will recognise pretty much any file type including FLV, MOV, MP4, AVI, JPEG etc. It can read from SD cards, Flash drives and has it's own onboard storage. It's a very useful little device, it's just a pity so many of them were returned as faulty when obviously it was the wrong battery type that caused the problems!

A GEM....., 21 April 2012

You know when you look through reviews at certain media playing units, and you try to decide which one to pick...well this Cyclone unit ticks all the boxes.

Its small, it's descreet and it plays almost anything you can throw at it. If you are like me and have a laptop without a HDMI output and you get annoyed when you can't play your favourite downloaded or ripped Movie through to your LCD TV, then look no further.

Top tip is to enter the Setup section of the unit when you've got it patched throught to your TV via the HDMI cable link, and select your viewing parameters, from then on, sit back and press play (once you have a Hard Drive or Flash Drive inserted into it) the menu listing is simple to access and it will give you a scroll down format, where you can select and play your favourite MP3 Tunes and different formatted Films. What ever you do though...don't lose the remote controller; without that, there is no way on this earth that you'll be able to access anything on your HD / FD.

Needed a cheap media player to take on holiday to hook up to the TV in the apartment abroad, so settled for the Cyclone 3.
Absolutely brilliant - it played everything I threw at it, MKV, MP4, AVI and a host more, plus the quality was really good.
Slight downside was that line of sight was needed for the remote but even that was not a big deal.
The bonus was an onboard 8Gb memory which for the price was incredible. I even use this for home use now and has displaced my PS3 which I used the USB facility to play back media files.
It even took my 1 Terrabyte external hard drive - truly amazing.

As near as perfect as a gadget can be, 6 Aug 2012
By J. Vickers "Ade"
This review is from : Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 Media Player - Black (Accessory)

I bought the Cyclone 3 after seeing a friend's Cyclone 2 (he also upgraded to the 3). Plugged in a USB hard disk I'd been gathering various files on, and off it went! Virtually no setup required, just plug everything in, use the remote control to navigate the hard disk, when you find the file you want to play, press Play, and off it goes!

There are some minor niggles which Sumvision could address:

- The remote is still a cheap flimsy thing, and it uses a CR2025 battery, not the more common AA or AAA you might expect. The buttons sometimes take a moment to register with the device.
- Sound is output either via HDMI OR component, not both - so if you've got HDMI video & component audio, you're in for a world of pain. Get an HDMI amplifier, you won't regret it. And it's worth it, because the Sumvision Cyclone outputs full surround sound audio...

Neither of the above are world-ending issues. The sound thing cost me a few pounds, but now I have a fabulous HDMI 5.1 system replacing the cheep'n'cheerful setup I had before, so it's not exactly a fault.

On the upside, not only has the Sumvision Cyclone effortlessly played every video & audio file I've tried it out on, but it even remembers where you were in a file you played earlier (and not just the last file, any file!), so you can carry on where you left off last time.

Despite the minor remote control niggles, and the audio restrictions, I am not hesitating to give this tiny gadget a 5* rating. In fact, if Sumvision addressed the remote control & the audio limitations, this would still be worth 5* at three times the price.
